Day 10 - The Great Wall of China We might be a little crazy! But we are super excited to have made it to The Great Wall of China. 9am hotel pick up and just over an hour drive from central Beijing. There are many ways to get to the top, and I imagine it can be a little challenging for people with prams or disabilities. Shuttle busses takes you to the first level and then it’s a 5-10 uphill walk to get to the cable car entrance or to the entry stairs (New Years resolution - more uphill walks on the treadmill). The cable car took us to the main entrance to The Wall. Luckily because it is low season there were relatively few tourists. To make things even better the sun was shining and it was relatively warm. The Wall spans over 21,000 km and was originally built over 2,000 years ago to protect the border of Ancient China. Over the years The Wall has been rebuilt and maintained by the various dynasties and is one of the most incredible architectural feats in history. Although we know it can be seen from the International Space Station, to see it in real life and be able to walk on it is truly amazing. The range of material used to build it from stone, marble, wood and even sticky rice to keep it together was incredible. The wall feels like a roller coaster with all it’s up and down sections. There are stairs of all shapes, sizes and depths and they have even recently added some glass ones for good measure - watch your step! There are small viewing windows to watch for enemies and shoot your arrows out of. You can see parts of the wall stretching all the way to the peaks of far away mountains. After spending about 1.5 hours walking The Wall we took the fast and fun way down with toboggans, which got us back to the base in just under 10min. There’s another Wonder of The World ✔️ off. 3 more to go!
