One of our very favorite things to do in the city is to photograph hand painted and typographically interesting signs, architectural ornaments, and ghost signs. On a recent walk through the Tenderloin (we love exploring the neighborhood we work in), we happened upon the Art Deco splendor of the Embassy Hotel on 610 Polk Street, a caduceus near St. Francis Memorial Hospital (900 Hyde Street), and a fabulous ghost sign for OWL [Cigars] in the 900 block of Post Street (look up above on the wall just past SF Party Store and Meraki Market. Ten Cents a Pound by Nhung N. Tran-Davies and Josée Bisaillon (@joseebisaillon) is one of those rare mirrors and windows books. It's a mirror in the sense that any parent can understand working themselves down to the bone for their child's future, and it's a window, at least for me, into everyday Vietnamese culture and life beyond the glamour shots we see in the movies. With touch points any parent can understand, like wanting your child to get a better education that you did, or wanting them to simply sprout wings and leave the nest, this book kindly and gently ...

Kids often come and ask for a book from a certain genre. I got this idea from Montgomery County Library System. Now when students ask, we have a starting place to talk about the books on the bookmarks. A few students have said they want to read all of the books on the list!!! #genres#advisory

Next on our macabre October series, we're turning our attention to true crime. Reader beware—this is a gruesome tale. One of Austin's most infamous unsolved murder cases is the killing of a prosperous farmer and his wife, Charles and Augusta Engler (featured here), and their adopted daughter Emma of Moore's Crossing near Del Valle. On August 9, 1925, their bodies were discovered by a neighbor and his son. Mr. and Mrs. Engler were found with gunshot wounds to the head, and their daughter Emma had been bludgeoned, burned repeatedly with lit cigarettes, and also fatally shot in the head. ...
